 BUYERS' GUIDE

General Advice for buying Furniture.
• Carefully measure your living room and draw a plan. The shape of the room and its features, such as fireplaces, will dictate whether the room is better suited to two or more settees,a three piece suite or a collection of chairs.

• One of the most important aspects to consider before settling on a style or size is the access to the room, both internally and through the front door. It is no good falling in love with a chunky armed chesterfield if your quaint Tudor cottage with narrow doors and odd nooks and crannies will not allow your sofa safe passage through the porch! Remember that designs with large or splayed out arms should be avoided in smaller rooms. To maximise your seating area choose a shape that has dainty arms.

• As far as comfort is concerned it is generally the high backed designs that provide the best shoulder and lumber support. The low backed fully upholstered furniture may look fantastically stylish but will not offer the comfort afforded by the high cushion back designs.

• All being individual, one persons soft sumptuous sofa is anothers soggy seating nightmare, and for this reason we offer a flexible choice of cushion interiors, and specialise in altering seat depths, widths and heights.

• So with the thousands of fabrics on offer today where do you start? Do you want to make a feature of your furniture, with bold patterns or checks or stripes, or do you prefer the furniture to be in plainer fabrics to allow you to have more patterned curtains. It is now the trend to use more than one fabric on the various pieces of furniture to create a co-ordinated look. Avoid heavy large scale patterns for smaller rooms, opting for neutral shades and small motif patterns. For further advice on choosing fabrics see our fabrics pages.

• Be careful not to overcrowd your room but don't forget footstools as they not only provide extra seating but can double up as a handy place to put your tray!

• Take your time choosing designs and colours; take advantage of samples being sent to your home as it is far more important to see the fabrics in situ than in the bright lights of the showroom. You can then sit back and relax in comfort and enjoy the labours of your work.
