How to buy Quality Furniture There are a number of indicators that you should look for when buying upholstered furniture that will give you clues as to the quality of the construction...
• Is the frame of solid beech construction? The weight of the furniture, when lifted, will generally indicate the quality of the frame. A well constructed piece of furniture will generally require substantial effort to lift. Watch out particularly for furniture that bends or flexes when you lift it at the corner!
• When you squeeze the arm, can you feel the wooden arm plate underneath the padding? Lift up the seat cushions - When you rub your hand over the seat, can you feel the seat springs underneath the seat platform? Is the spring platform cover of matching fabric or is it a cheap beige or black platform lining? If the answer to any of these questions is yes then perhaps you should continue your search.
• Is the cover adequately patterned matched? Does the cover match on each side of the arms, and if there are several pieces of matching furniture, does the pattern match carry on from piece to piece? Does the pattern carry on down to the valances? Badly matched fabric on top is often an indicator of poorly constructed furniture underneath...
• Lift up the valances; is it possible to detect a visible line of staples fixing the valance in position? On less well made upholstery this is generally the case.
• Is the furniture supplied with matching scatter cushions and arm sleeves, or are these charged as extras?
• Does the salesman have an in depth knowledge of how the furniture is made? |
